Justice Studies Program

The Justice Studies major is an interdisciplinary program that empowers students to examine complex issues through sociological, philosophical, criminological, and legal lenses. This program explores justice at the intersection of law, policy, and society, guiding students to think critically, act ethically, and understand their role as global citizens.

The Justice Studies program is offered in a hybrid format, combining in-person instruction with online components.

Concentrations and Minors

Justice Studies majors choose a concentration: Criminal Justice or International Justice. Three optional minors are available: Criminal Justice, Justice and Families, and Social Justice: Gender, Race, and Queerness. Students in the Criminal Justice concentration cannot also minor in Criminal Justice but may select Justice and Families or Social Justice.

International Justice Concentration

This concentration delves into the global dimensions of justice, examining criminal justice, social justice, and legal issues that span national borders. Topics include human rights, terrorism, cybercrime, immigration, genocide, war, human trafficking, and more. Students gain critical knowledge of cross-border policy, advocacy, and law, preparing them for careers in international law enforcement, human rights organizations, government, defense, or national security.

Criminal Justice Concentration

The Criminal Justice concentration focuses on the relationships among law, the justice system, and society. Students explore theories of crime, law enforcement, comparative justice systems, and the administration of justice, preparing them to work in criminal justice, security, agencies administering justice, social services, and related settings.

Criminal Justice Minor

The Criminal Justice minor explores the complexities of the judiciary, legislative, and correctional systems, studying topics such as police brutality, the death penalty, and broader issues like race, gender, and social class as they intersect with justice. The curriculum provides essential theoretical knowledge and introductory research methods, developing analytical and practical skills for entry-level opportunities in criminal justice agencies and graduate studies in related fields.
