About Program

Program Overview

Chemistry Program

The BS in Chemistry builds a foundation in chemical principles, experimental techniques, and analytical thinkingskills essential for success in science, industry, and health professions. Students gain hands-on experience in modern teaching labs, using instrumentation for organic, physical, analytical, and inorganic chemistry. All instruction follows green chemistry principles and emphasizes safety, sustainability, and real-world application.

Program Format

The program is offered in-person.

College or School

The College of Science and Mathematics offers this program.

Area of Study

The program falls under the category of Health, Medicine and the Sciences.

Concentrations Offered

  • General Concentration
  • Business Concentration

Cost Information

In-state tuition is $7,839 per semester.

Chemistry Program Concentrations & Minor

The program offers concentrations in General Chemistry or Business, allowing students to tailor their degree to their goals.

General Concentration

This flexible concentration provides a comprehensive education in chemistry, covering core areas such as organic, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry. Students are prepared for careers in research, quality control, or laboratory science, and for graduate or professional study.

Business Concentration

This concentration integrates chemistry with business principles to prepare students for roles in pharmaceutical sales, product management, operations, or industrial chemistry. Courses include business foundations alongside core chemistry requirements. Students are eligible to apply for this program after their freshman year if they have a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Minor in Chemistry

The Chemistry Minor is designed for students majoring in another discipline who want a solid foundation in chemistry. The minor starts with General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, followed by 56 credits of upper-level electives, such as Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Inorganic Chemistry. This 24-credit minor pairs well with majors in data science, biology, physics, engineering, environmental science, or health-related fields.

Teacher Certification & Dual Degrees

Students can pursue a pathway to teacher certification or apply for an accelerated combined degree to earn their bachelors and masters in less time.

Chemistry with Teacher Certification (Preschool- Grade 12)

Students interested in becoming certified chemistry teachers apply to the Teacher Education Program and add a second major in Secondary Education. The program includes a sequence of professional education courses, fieldwork, and the required course SASE 402: Methods of Teaching Science in Secondary Schools. Upon graduation, students are prepared to teach high school level chemistry.

B.S./M.S. in Chemistry

This accelerated five-year program allows students to earn both their bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry. Students begin graduate-level coursework during their senior year, giving them a head start on advanced roles in research, industry, or future academic work.

Combined Chemistry B.S./ M.A.T. Teaching with Teacher Certification in Chemistry (Preschool- Grade 12) and Teacher of Students with Disabilities

In this combined program, students earn a BS in Chemistry and a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) with certification in both general and special education. Students complete education courses, fieldwork, and student teaching alongside their chemistry coursework. This program is ideal for students passionate about inclusive STEM education.

ACS Certification Option

The undergraduate programs meet the criteria established by the American Chemical Society (ACS), allowing students to complete the proper sequence of courses to receive ACS Certification.
