Interdisciplinary Studies, Bachelor of Arts
The Interdisciplinary Studies major is designed for students in the humanities and social sciences who wish to create their own program of study, either by designing a major that straddles several traditional disciplines or by dividing their studies between departments. This interdisciplinary major must maintain a substantive theme or focus.
Interdisciplinary Studies Major Requirements
Students pursuing this major must submit a proposal at the end of their sophomore year, which should include courses from at least two departments that provide insight into the chosen topic, concept, issue, time period, etc. The proposal must be supported by a faculty mentor and approved by the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee.
- The major requires 45 to 60 credits, including all related prerequisites and courses.
- Independent study, research, and internships may be included.
- At least 21 credits must be earned at the 300-level or higher.
- Courses from the School of Engineering are not permitted, except by petition.
- Students must earn a C- or better in courses completing major requirements.
- All courses for the major must be taken for a letter grade.
- Students must still meet all other requirements for a bachelor's degree in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.
Rules and Guidelines
- Students must work with a full-time faculty member from the Homewood campus to construct a curricular plan.
- The proposal should explain how each course provides insight into the given topic, concept, issue, time period, etc.
- After approval, the student continues to work with the faculty mentor and Academic Advising to oversee completion of requirements.
- Writing and Communication in the Major: Students must complete at least 6 credits of Writing and Communication foundational ability coursework in one major.
Program Details
The Interdisciplinary Studies major offers students the flexibility to design their own program of study, allowing them to explore a wide range of topics and interests. With the support of a faculty mentor and the approval of the Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee, students can create a unique and personalized course of study that meets their academic and professional goals.
