Program Overview

The DERM 954 Ambulatory Dermatology Elective is a university program that provides outpatient dermatology experience, exposing students to a typical private practice where patients present with a broad array of problems.


Program Details

  • The program offers 2-4 credits and is designed to help students learn to diagnose, treat, and/or appropriately refer common dermatologic conditions.
  • Students will also become aware of cutaneous manifestations of serious and significant systemic disease.

Requisites and Designation

  • The program requires graduate or professional standing.
  • It is designated as a graduate course, counting toward 50% of the graduate coursework requirement.
  • The program is repeatable for credit, with an unlimited number of completions allowed.

Learning Outcomes

  • Accurately describe skin lesions, including morphology, configuration, and distribution.
  • Recognize cutaneous manifestations of systemic diseases.
    • Demonstrate familiarity with common diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in dermatology, including:
      • Cryotherapy
      • Shave and punch skin biopsy
      • Potassium hydroxide mounts
      • Scabies oil mounts
      • Tzanck smear
      • Dermoscopy
  • Describe 1st and 2nd lines of therapy for common and important lesions and eruptions.
  • Identify risk factors for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
  • Perform supervised full-body skin exams for high-risk patients.
  • Demonstrate the ability to write appropriate clinical notes and communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Identify clinical situations in which a dermatologist should be consulted and other clinical situations that may be managed in a primary care clinic without referral.
