The ANESTHES 920 CLINICAL ANESTHESIOLOGY ELECTIVE is a university program offering 2-4 credits. The program is supervised by house staff, clinical anesthetists, and attending physicians.

- Pre-operative chart review and anesthetic plan proposal
- Participating in scheduled procedures

- Caring for patients undergoing sedation, monitored anesthesia care, general and regional anesthesia
Learning Objectives
The program aims to teach students:
- Indications for and data provided by various invasive and non-invasive monitoring techniques
- Relevant pharmacology, including anesthetic agents, muscle relaxants, resuscitation drugs, and pain medications
- Fundamental airway management skills, including:
- Bag-mask ventilation
- Supraglottic airway placement
- Endotracheal intubation skills
- Intravenous access technique practice, including a central line placement course

Learning Outcomes
The program has the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate the initial steps of resuscitation, including IV access, central venous access, and airway management.
- Explain the anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology relevant to anesthetic induction, maintenance, and emergence.
- Perform pre-operative airway examination; identify airway anatomy and structures, including innervation and rationale for/approach to awake intubation.
- Identify medical conditions that affect anesthetic risk by organ system and describe the role of medical management of these conditions.
- Propose comprehensive anesthetic plans for surgery or procedures to resident and attending physician mentors.
- Demonstrate effective, respectful communication with patients, faculty, and staff to provide high-level patient care.
- Incorporate feedback regarding technical skill and clinical performance into improved clinical skill technique and patient care.
- Interpret the medical literature and apply it to the practice of evidence-based medicine.
- Interpret basic Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) images.
