Program Overview


Master of Public Health Program

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) program at the University of California, Irvine, is designed to create a motivated cadre of public health professionals who are prepared to implement effective strategies for reducing the burden of disease and disability in culturally diverse communities.


Program Overview

The program's distinctive mission is to provide students with broad training in the global dimensions of public health principles, enabling them to lead and work collaboratively on precise assessments of health-risk factors and on the management of evidence-based prevention strategies.


Program Requirements

The M.P.H. program is a 63- or 64-unit degree program taken over five to six quarters. Students must complete seven core courses, at least six concentration courses, and either 8 or 12 units of elective courses, depending on the concentration. All courses required for the M.P.H. must be taken for a letter grade, except for the capstone course. Only grades of B or better represent satisfactory scholarship.

Biostatistics Concentration

  • Complete: STATS 201, STATS 202, STATS 203, STATS 280, STATS 281A, STATS 281B
  • Complete at least one quarter of the PUBHLTH 291 series
  • Complete 12 units of approved electives

Community Health and Health Equity Concentration

  • Complete: PUBHLTH 207A, PUBHLTH 207B, PUBHLTH 245, PUBHLTH 246, PUBHLTH 247, PUBHLTH 244
  • Complete at least two quarters of the PUBHLTH 291 series
  • Complete 8 units of approved electives

Environmental and Occupational Health Concentration

  • Complete: PUBHLTH 207A, PUBHLTH 207B, EHS 298, EPIDEM 205 or EHS 203
  • Select one from the following: EHS 202, EHS 204, EHS 206A, EHS 206B, EHS 212, EHS 294, BIO SCI 285, PHYSIO 206A

Comprehensive Examination

All M.P.H. students are required to pass the comprehensive exam, which is the "Certified in Public Health" (CPH) examination, to advance to candidacy.


Practicum and Culminating Experience

Students are required to complete a supervised internship of 180 hours while registered in the Graduate Practicum and Culminating Experience in Public Health (PUBHLTH 295).


Program in Law and Graduate Studies

Highly qualified students interested in combining the study of law with graduate qualifications in Public Health can undertake concurrent degree study under the auspices of UC Irvine's Program in Law and Graduate Studies (PLGS).
