Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) reflect the universal call to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030. In line with these global goals, Universidade de Aveiro (UAveiro) adopted the SDG Keyword Mapping, developed by the University of Auckland in New Zealand, to identify correspondences in the training offer.
By mapping the SDGs onto the training offer, UAveiro aims to inform and sensitize students to real and current issues, empowering them and getting them actively involved in sustainable development. The analysis of the contribution of the training offer to the SDGs will also make it possible to promote the continuous improvement of the teaching-learning process.
The method consists of mining predefined and validated keywords in the descriptive text of the training offer on UAveiro portal. The writing of the text is the responsibility of the respective course director, with the automated method for updating the SDGs depending on the editing of the text.
When applying the method, it is necessary to differentiate between the contribution of the Higher Education Institution (HEI) Universidade de Aveiro to the SDGs and the partial contribution of its training offer to the whole. In this context, SDG 4, which focuses on quality education, is of great relevance to UAveiro as an HEI and is reflected primarily in the courses aimed at training new teachers, regardless of whether all courses promote quality teaching. SDG 8, which promotes sustained economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all, will be associated with courses directly related to economic growth and employment, ensuring relevant and impactful integration, even though all training prepares students for the job market. SDG 17, which focuses on partnerships, is not included in the mapping method, as it is presented as a facilitator for the implementation of the other 16 goals.
The adoption of the SDG Mapping by Universidade de Aveiro represents a transformative step towards a more sustainable and responsible academic environment. This initiative positions the university to promote the integration of sustainability into its educational offer, preparing students to make informed choices and be proactive contributors to a sustainable future.
