Program Overview


Introduction to the Doctorate in Music

The Doctoral Music programme at Aveiro University aims to prepare researchers and artists for the exercise of professional music life and the development of research work.

Curricular Structure of the Course

The curricular structure of the course is as follows:


1st Year

In the 1st year, there are 3 compulsory subjects:


  • Research Projects in Music (annual)
  • Thematic Seminar I and II (semestral) There are also 2 optional subjects per semester:
  • Specialization Project I and II
  • Recital I and II The choice between Specialization Project and Recital is mainly aimed at the Performance path, as candidates in other paths usually attend Specialization Projects according to their areas of research.

2nd and 3rd Year

In the following years, the curricular structure of the Doctorate is mainly focused on writing the Thesis. In the case of the Performance path, there is the possibility of complementing the theoretical work of the Thesis with Recitals, and in the case of Composition, the creation of a Composition portfolio.

The Doctorate in Music has a duration of 6 - 8 semesters and is offered in daytime mode.


Tuition Fees

The national/EU student tuition fee for the 2024/2025 academic year is 2750/year, while the international tuition fee for the same period is also 2750/year.
