Program Overview

Master in Regional and Urban Planning

The Master in Regional and Urban Planning provides theoretical and empirical tools for developing skills to critically analyse, understand, and intervene in the territory. The course promotes:

  • an understanding of the processes of socio-economic and territorial transformation, valuing the needs and expectations of the communities and institutions involved, the challenges facing them in terms of growth and sustainable economic development, spatial justice, access to information, and citizen participation opportunities.
  • the formation of propositional skills, in the design of territorial strategies, plans, and programs, based on appropriate professional and disciplinary standards. Learning outcomes achievement is significantly supported by challenge and project-based learning methodologies.
  • the adoption of an appropriate deontological position to the practice of territorial planning, which endorses the dialogue between science and society, articulates economic, environmental, and social interests, and creates conditions for social and political inclusion.

Areas of Specialisation

The course has two areas of specialisation:

  • In the urbanism branch, city and urban planning focus mainly on urban structure and form, transport/mobility systems, and public space, urban policies, and the city's production and implementation processes.

The private sector also includes companies that tend to include more skilled professionals from regional and urban planning in their working teams.

Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The University of Aveiro adopted the SDG Keyword Mapping, developed by the University of Auckland, to identify correspondences in the training offer. This method aims to inform and sensitize students to real and current issues, empowering them and getting them actively involved in sustainable development. The analysis of the contribution of the training offer to the SDGs will also make it possible to promote the continuous improvement of the teaching-learning process.
