Program Overview

Doctorate in Geological Engineering

The PhD in Geological Engineering, jointly offered by NOVA FCT and the University of Aveiro, provides advanced training in Earth Sciences, with a special focus on Georesources, Geotechnics, and Geoenvironmental Engineering. The main goal is to develop scientific and technological knowledge in Engineering, promoting innovation, infrastructure resilience, and the advancement of sustainable technologies applied to Geological Engineering. It addresses an emerging need for sustainable development, based on resource circularity, climate change, the green economy, and social well-being.

Program Objectives

This program aims to train highly qualified specialists and researchers capable of tackling challenges and meeting the demands of contemporary society, particularly in the responsible management of geological and energy resources, geotechnical site characterization, and asset management (both natural and man-made). It also includes the assessment and mitigation of geotechnical and geoenvironmental risks, the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and adaptation to climate change, among other areas of intervention.

Key Features

  • Advanced scientific and technical training, focused on the development of cutting-edge knowledge and technology in key areas of Engineering applied to Earth Sciences.
  • Acquisition of skills to design, coordinate, and carry out innovative research projects focused on developing solutions for contemporary societal challenges.
