Program Overview


Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography

The Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography is a highly specialized program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate ultrasound machines and perform diagnostic medical sonographic examinations. This course commences in 2027 and is accredited by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).


Course Overview

The demand for ultrasound as a first-line investigation has increased across all care settings, creating a shortage of sonographers in Australia. In this course, students will acquire knowledge and skills in applied anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, as well as the application and operation of ultrasound imaging systems. Upon successful completion of this course, students will fulfill the requirements for registration with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry.


Entry Requirements

  • Academic admission requirements may be satisfied through completion of a Bachelor degree or equivalent prior learning, including at least five years of relevant professional experience.
  • All applicants are required to have completed a Bachelor of Preclinical Foundations of Imaging Science (T78) at ECU.
  • English language requirements apply, with international students required to provide an English language test approved by ECU.

Fees

  • Domestic fee-paying students: estimated 1st year indicative fee is AUD $27,300.
  • International students: estimated 1st year indicative fee is AUD $41,450.

Duration and Availability

  • The course is not available part-time.
  • Location: Joondalup campus, with possible clinical placements in rural or regional settings.

The course structure includes the following units:


  • NRB5112: Translational Science (20 credit points)
  • SON5101: Sonography Competency Clinical Placement 1 (40 credit points)
  • SON5201: Sonography Competency Clinical Placement 2 (40 credit points)
  • MMP6102: Medical Science Masters Project (20 credit points)

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:


  1. Apply cognitive, technical, and creative skills to investigate, evaluate, and synthesize specialized medical sonography information in diverse clinical situations.
  2. Communicate advanced medical sonography knowledge, theory, and best-practice evidence to a variety of audiences.
  3. Demonstrate initiative, accountability, self-management, and high-level, independent judgment in professional practice.

Professional Recognition

This course is accredited by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR). Upon completion of the Bachelor of Preclinical Foundations of Imaging Science (T78) and the Graduate Diploma in Medical Sonography (T77), students are eligible to upgrade their status to become an Accredited Medical Sonographer.
