Program Overview
Introduction to Biomedical Sciences Top-Up Modules
The Biomedical Sciences top-up modules are part of a continuing professional development (CPD) framework designed for students with an existing degree in biomedical sciences or a related field. This framework offers a suite of optional modules for those who wish to become registered biomedical scientists or enhance their professional development.
Program Overview
The program is delivered via blended learning, combining online and in-person sessions at Aston University, Birmingham. The modules are ideal for individuals looking to top up their existing degree or take a course as part of their continuing professional development.
Module Details
The available modules in this suite of courses include:
- Cell Biology
- Cellular Pathology
- Clinical Biochemistry
- Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Haematology and Transfusion Science
- Immunology
- Medical Microbiology
- Molecular Biology and Genetics
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for the program, applicants must have a non-accredited undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences or an undergraduate degree in a related field. International students who are already in the UK with a valid visa are welcome to apply, but the university cannot accept applications from international students who wish to come to the UK solely to take this course.
Top-Up Requirements for IBMS Registration
For students taking the module to top up their existing degree for IBMS registration, it is necessary to contact the Institute of Biomedical Science prior to registering for the module. The IBMS will assess the degree to confirm its eligibility for top-up and determine the additional subject areas in which further qualifications are needed.
Fees
The tuition fee for UK students is 」850 per 10 credits for the 2025/26 academic year. Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation.
Delivery and Assessment
The course is delivered via blended learning, with all course material available on Blackboard, the university's Virtual Learning Environment. A single three-hour on-campus practical is associated with this module, and attendance is compulsory unless evidence of equivalent learning in the workplace can be provided. Assessments must be taken in person on campus, with examinations held between 18 March 2026 and 27 March 2026.
Career Prospects
The CPD courses offer the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills, developing careers in biomedical sciences. The modules provide the academic competences required to apply to the Health Professions Council for Registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
