Program Overview


Cell Biology Standalone Module

The Cell Biology standalone module is designed to enhance expertise in cell biology, focusing on the structure, function, and communication of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells to boost biomedical science careers.

Module Overview

Studied via blended learning (online and in-person sessions), this module provides a comprehensive overview of cell biology. It is ideal for topping up a degree to become a registered Biomedical Scientist or for advancing professional development. The module deepens understanding of how cells function, replicate, and contribute to both health and disease.


Indicative Content

The indicative content includes:


  • Exploration of cells as the basic unit of life
  • Structure and function of subcellular components such as organelles and the cytoskeleton
  • Differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
  • Cell communication and signaling
  • Cell division, the cell cycle, and cell death
  • Introduction to stem cells and the basics of developmental biology

  • This is a level 4 module, equivalent to a Certificate of Higher Education, worth 10 credits.

Objectives and Outcomes

  1. Enables understanding of the fundamental components and processes involved in the birth, life, and death of cells.
  2. Enables identification of the nature and properties of key cellular molecules and organelles and understanding their roles in cell physiology and replication.
  3. Introduces basic concepts of stem cells and provides an overview of developmental biology.

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:


  • Discuss and apply knowledge of the structure and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Discuss and apply knowledge of cell division, cell cycle, and cell death.
  • Discuss and apply knowledge of stem cells, cell specialization, and cooperation.

Entry Requirements

  • A non-accredited undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences or an undergraduate degree in a related field (such as biology or biochemistry).
  • For 'top-up' to become a registered Biomedical Scientist, prior assessment by the Institute of Biomedical Science is required to confirm the degree's eligibility and determine additional subject areas needed.
  • Degrees not eligible for 'top-up' may require applying for the accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science undergraduate degree.
  • No additional requirements for undertaking the module for professional development.
  • International students already in the UK with a valid visa are welcome to apply, but the university cannot accept applications from international students wishing to come to the UK solely for this course or for distance learning.

Fees

  • UK students (2025/26): Ł850 per 10 credits
  • Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase in subsequent years in line with inflation linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI).

Delivery and Assessment

  • Delivered via blended learning with an online induction session, recorded lectures, self-assessment quizzes, and coursework submission via Blackboard.
  • A single three-hour on-campus practical is compulsory unless evidence of equivalent learning in the workplace is provided.
  • Assessments must be in person on campus, including an on-campus exam in April 2026.

Career Prospects

  • The CPD courses offer the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills for career development.
  • These modules allow obtaining the academic competences required to apply to the Health Professions Council for Registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
