Program Overview

Introduction to the Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology Program

The Doctor of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP.D.) program at Nova Southeastern University is designed for practicing speech-language pathologists seeking to expand their expertise and assume higher-level roles in the profession. This program aims to enhance knowledge, leadership, problem-solving skills, and research capabilities, preparing graduates for advanced positions in speech-language pathology.

Program Overview

The SLP.D. program is a hybrid doctoral degree that combines online and face-to-face instruction. It is tailored for working professionals, offering flexibility and convenience. The program focuses on advanced practice, research, and leadership, with an emphasis on interprofessional collaboration and the application of evidence-based practices.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the SLP.D. program includes a variety of courses that cover topics such as technology and instrumentation in communication sciences, supervision, counseling, clinical education, and research design. Students can choose between a dissertation track and a non-dissertation track, each with its own set of requirements and outcomes.

Dissertation Track

The dissertation track requires the completion of an applied dissertation, which is a detailed, accurate, and cohesive account of a scholarly investigation designed to answer a research question directed toward the improvement of practice in speech-language pathology. This track is ideal for students interested in pursuing research and academic careers.

Non-Dissertation Track

The non-dissertation track focuses on interprofessional practice and education, leading to the attainment of a TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer certificate and a concentration in Telehealth. This track is suited for students who wish to enhance their clinical and leadership skills without the commitment of a dissertation.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the SLP.D. program, applicants must:

  • Hold a master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.2.
  • Have at least three years of cumulative work experience as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), although applicants with less experience may be considered under certain provisions.
  • Possess a valid Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) and current state SLP licensure, or provide proof of an accepted credential in the country of practice.
  • Submit official transcripts, a current vitae/resume, and undergo an applicant interview.

Program Completion Requirements

To graduate from the SLP.D. program, students must:

  • Satisfactorily complete all required courses.
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Successfully complete an applied dissertation (for the dissertation track) or the TeamSTEPPS Master Trainer certificate courses (for the non-dissertation track).
  • Complete the program within seven years from the initial term of enrollment.
