Program Overview
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's M.S. in Applied Physics is a graduate program that provides excellent preparation for those planning to continue their education through the Ph.D., either in physics or an engineering field, or for a career as an instructor in a two-year college. Students have opportunities for research in various areas, including Biophysics, Computational Physics, Medical Physics, and Optics.
Program Concentrations
There are two concentrations within the M.S. in Applied Physics program:
- Applied Physics Concentration (Thesis or non-thesis option)
- Applied Optics Concentration (Thesis option only)
Research Opportunities
Students electing the thesis option will be well-qualified for employment in industry or a research laboratory. The Applied Optics concentration is designed for students intending to pursue a career in optics fields, such as optoelectronics, optical communications, and optical metrology. This concentration would also be excellent preparation for those planning to continue their education through the Ph.D. in optics.
Program Details
The M.S. in Applied Physics program is offered by the Klein College of Science. Exceptional undergraduate students at UNC Charlotte may apply for the Early Entry Program and begin work toward the graduate degree before completion of the baccalaureate degree. All candidates for the degree must pass a final examination administered by their Advisory Committee.
Program Delivery and Credit Hours
The program is delivered on-campus and requires 30 credit hours.

The program admits students in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, with application deadlines as follows:
- March 1 (Fall Priority)
- August 1 (Fall Final)
- October 1 (Spring Priority)
- December 1 (Spring Final)
- May 1 (Summer I)
- June 15 (Summer II)
