Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) Program

The Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) degree program is designed for experienced professionals who have focused on developing their careers and want to broaden their business knowledge and gain additional leadership, management, and business operations skills. This program offers the depth and rigor of a traditional MBA with the schedule flexibility required of professionals.

Program Description

The EMBA program value is enhanced by the cohort class structure where a new group of students start in the fall of each year and take all their core classes together. In doing so, the classroom dynamics, commitment to the program, and resulting learning experience is greatly enhanced.

Program Delivery

The EMBA is designed to meet the needs of busy professionals by meeting in person on Friday afternoons and all day Saturday on alternate weekends for five semesters: fall, winter, summer, fall, and winter. There is a summer break in July and August. In order to assure effective instruction and interaction, class sizes are limited.

Admission Terms and Application Deadlines

Applicants are admitted fall semester only. Before an applicants file can be reviewed for full program admission, all application documents must be received in Oakland University Graduate School by the semester deadlines listed below. Incomplete applications will not be sent to departments for admission review.

Application Requirements

To be considered for graduate admission, applicants must submit all Graduate Application Requirements and additional department requirements by the published application deadlines:

• Curriculum Vitae or Resumé
• A minimum of five+ years of professional experience.
• A personal interview with the program director or a designated representative.
• An undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Admission Review and Assessment

Admission to graduate school at Oakland University is selective. In making admission recommendations to Oakland University Graduate School, the admission committee will assess the potential of applicants for success in the program by examining their undergraduate records, recommendation forms, prerequisite courses, experience, and any other admission requirements established by the academic department.

Degree Requirements

The Executive Master of Business Administration degree consists of 39 credits taken over 21 months. Twenty-seven of the 39 credits consist of foundation courses completed by the entire cohort. The remaining 12 credits are taken as electives.

Course Requirements

a. Preparatory Work and Program Launch (1 credit)

• EMBA 5000 - Teambuilding, Communication, and Introduction to Business Concepts (1 credit)
  • Teambuilding and Communication - This section of the course will help students to learn basic skills to work in teams and communicate effectively.
  • Introduction to Business Concepts - This section of the course will provide an introduction to key business concepts to help students get a broad introduction to the curriculum.

b. Business Core Course (22 credits)

Each student must complete the following 22 credits of core coursework:

• EMBA 5040 - Data Analytics for Executives (3 credits)
• EMBA 5110 - Financial Accounting and Disclosures (2 credits)
• EMBA 5120 - Managerial Accounting and Decision Making (2 credits)
• EMBA 5210 - Strategic Thinking and Competitive Analysis (2 credits)
• EMBA 5220 - Global Macroeconomic Environment of Business (2 credits)
• EMBA 5410 - Global Supply Chain and Operations Management (3 credits)
• EMBA 5450 - Business Information and Analytics Systems (2 credits)
• EMBA 5600 - Marketing Management (3 credits)
• EMBA 5700 - Strategic Finance (3 credits)

c. Leadership Courses (11 credits)

Each student must complete 11 credits of leadership coursework. These courses develop students leadership skills through coursework and professional development activities:

• EMBA 5310 - Leading People and Organizations (2 credits)
• EMBA 5315 - Leadership Feedback and Development (2 credits)
• EMBA 5320 - Negotiations and Conflict Resolution (2 credits)
• EMBA 5350 - Global Strategic Management (3 credits)
• EMBA 5500 - Law, Ethics, and Leadership (2 credits)

d. Topical Issues (4 credits)

Each student must complete 4 credits of coursework addressing issues that are relevant and current for most businesses:

• EMBA 6600 - Special Topic (2 credits)
• EMBA 6900 - Special Topic (2 credits)

e. OU Advantage - Professional Development (1 credit)

Through a series of executive seminars and interactions with professional development staff, students will further develop their leadership skills.

• EMBA 6930 - C-Suite Presentations and Professional Development (1 credit)

Satisfactory Academic Progress

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) is the term used to denote a students successful completion of coursework toward a certificate or degree. Federal regulations require the Office of Financial Aid to monitor Satisfactory Academic Progress for all financial aid recipients each semester. Students who fall behind in their coursework, or fail to achieve minimum standards for grade point average and completion of classes, may lose their eligibility for all types of federal, state and university aid.

Good Academic Standing

All graduate students are expected to remain in good academic standing throughout the entire course of their graduate program. To be in good academic standing, a graduate student must make satisfactory progress toward fulfilling degree requirements, including the completion of critical degree milestones as set forth by the academic program. The student must also maintain a minimum semester and overall GPA of 3.0. Additionally, graduate students must meet all department academic standards which may be more stringent than the minimum set forth by the University. Department requirements: In accordance with the university requirements for graduate students, a grade-point average of 3.0 is required for graduation. Students, therefore, should maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Students may be dismissed if they do not maintain a GPA of 3.0 or appropriate progress toward the degree as determined by the Office of Graduate Business Programs. Any course resulting in a grade below 2.0 must be repeated. Graduate students who are not in good academic standing for any reason are subject to probation and/or dismissal from further graduate study.

Plan of Study

All accepted applicants, in consultation with their assigned faculty program adviser, must develop a plan of study that details specific courses the students will use to satisfy their degree requirements. The plan of study must be approved by the faculty program adviser and submitted by the student to Oakland University Graduate School. Masters and graduate certificate students must submit a department-approved plan of study by the end of their first semester of graduate coursework. Doctoral students must submit an approved plan of study prior to completion of the first year of coursework. Note: Credit granted for successful completion of a course toward an undergraduate degree program may not be repeated for a graduate degree. If a substitution is approved, the minimum number of program-approved graduate credits will be required. A Petition of Exception - OU Course Waiver/Substitution requesting the substitution must be approved.
