Introduction to the Big Data Summer Institute
The Big Data Summer Institute is an interdisciplinary training and research program that introduces undergraduate students to research at the intersection of big data and human health. This rapidly growing field uses quantitative analysis, theoretical statistics, and data science to solve public health problems and improve peoples lives.

The institute exposes undergraduate students to diverse experiences and techniques, drawing from the expertise and experience of outstanding faculty of several departments at the University of Michigan, including biostatistics, statistics, and electrical engineering and computer science.
Program Details
The Big Data Summer Institute is hosted in-person in Ann Arbor, Michigan at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Participants in the program are provided with:
- A comprehensive summer research experience in biostatistics, big data computing, and professional development
- Single-occupancy, on-campus dormitory housing at Couzens Hall
- A $2,000 stipend
- Up to $500 in travel reimbursements
- $200 in Blue Bucks for on-campus dining
- Lunches and dinners provided at numerous program events and social activities
