Introduction to the BA in Global Languages
The BA in Global Languages is a dynamic four-year undergraduate degree designed for students with a passion for languages, cultures, and global communication. Course Information
With this innovative course, students will study two languages, with the option to explore a third at Beginners Level in their first year. Language options include Gaeilge, French, Spanish, German, or Italian. Students will develop advanced linguistic skills through small, interactive classes led by native speakers, ensuring fluency and confidence. The degree goes beyond language acquisition, diving into Linguistics, Translation Studies, and Media, gaining the tools to understand how language shapes the world.
Year 1
Students have the option of taking two languages with Global Language Studies, Léann an Aistriúcháin, or Ancient Classics. Alternatively, they can choose three languages.
Year 2
Students will take one major language and one minor language with Global Language Studies, Léann an Aistriúcháin, or Ancient Classics: Literature, Art, Thought. They also have the option of taking one major and two minor languages.
Year 3
Year 3 of the BA (Global Languages) course is a structured year of mandatory immersion in the target languages. Students taking Gaeilge as one of their languages will spend one semester in the Gaeltacht and one semester on Erasmus in one of the countries of their other language. Students taking two European languages will take one of the following routes:
- Academic year on Erasmus in one of the language areas (and a minimum of 12 weeks in the other language area).
- One semester on Erasmus in each of the language areas.
- Work placement as a Language Assistant for a year in one of the language areas (and a minimum of 12 weeks in the other language area).
Year 4
In Year 4, students will continue to major in their primary language and either continue their two language minors or one language minor and a minor in Global Language Studies, Léann an Aistriúcháin, or Ancient Classics: Literature, Art, Thought.

How Students Learn
- Language Immersion - Students engage in intensive language study through interactive classes, multimedia resources, and conversation practice with native speakers.
- Cultural Studies - Modules on literature, film, history, and society help students understand the cultures associated with their chosen languages.
- ERASMUS - A year abroad, allowing students to experience full language immersion and cultural exchange.
- Interdisciplinary Approach - Integrate translation studies, linguistics, translation technology, intralingual subtitling, broadening career opportunities.

How Students Are Assessed
- Continuous Assessment - Regular coursework, including essays, presentations, in-class tests, and language exercises. Students receive regular feedback on their progress. (30%)
- Examinations - Written exams will take place before Christmas and in May. Written and oral exams evaluate proficiency in grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and communication. Final Examination accounts for (50%)
- Oral Assessments - Students participate in debates, interviews, and presentations to test fluency and pronunciation. (10%)
- Project Work - Research and subtitling projects, translation assignments allow students to apply their skills in real-world contexts. (10%)
- The year abroad in Year 3 is assessed entirely on a pass/fail basis. Students generally attain 45 credits across the academic year in two countries.
Entry Requirements and Fees
Entry Requirements
- Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 in the Leaving Certificate, including Irish, English, another language, and three other subjects recognized for entry purposes.
- A H4 in a modern European language other than Irish and English is also required.
