Program Overview


Diploma of Education Studies

The Diploma of Education Studies is a one-year undergraduate program designed for students who did not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education. This Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) accredited education pathway course helps students build the skills needed for a career in education.


Overview

This program prepares students to enter the second year of a teaching degree. It is designed for students who did not meet the entry requirements for the Bachelor of Education through the VTAC (or direct) selection process.


Progress to a Bachelor Degree

Successful completion of this course earns students a place in the second year of one of the following specialized courses:


  • Bachelor of Education Studies: to lead learning programs outside the traditional classroom
  • Bachelor of Early Childhood Education: to teach and care for children from birth to five years
  • Bachelor of Arts: choose to study fine art, communication, digital media, history, sociology, and more

After completing additional requirements, students will also be eligible for:


  • Bachelor of Education (P-12): to teach all age groups from prep to Year 12
  • Bachelor of Education (Primary): to teach in primary schools

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:


  1. Appraise a broad and coherent body of knowledge in relation to the changing nature of education in a rapidly-evolving global context
  2. Apply knowledge of educational issues to improve educational practices
  3. Discuss a range of learning theories and identify how they enhance student learning
  4. Develop students' capabilities and capacity in literacy and numeracy that enhance communication for academic contexts, including in the use of Information and Communication Technologies
  5. Foster creative skills and thought processes so as to prepare to confront and pro-actively engage with 21st Century challenges
  6. Develop contextual understandings of contemporary life in a global community, and collaborate with colleagues to promote principles of peace, sustainability, ethical conduct, and political and economic freedom
  7. Articulate and review the concepts of inclusion, equity, and access for socially just education
  8. Investigate the changing nature of society to prepare for the development of educational policies and processes relevant to students needs

If students continue to the Bachelor of Education (P-12), they will be job-ready before they graduate thanks to their extensive experience teaching in a classroom.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course will need to meet the entry criteria outlined below. If they dont meet the entry criteria, they may be able to gain entry by first completing a related course or unit(s).


  • Completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE or equivalent)
  • IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score of 6.0 (with no band less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking)

Special Entry Programs

If students are from a disadvantaged or underrepresented social, economic, or cultural background, they may be eligible for one of our special admission programs.


Credit & Entry Pathways

If students dont meet the entry requirements for this course, there may be an alternative study pathway to achieving their goal. In some cases, they may receive credit for their previous study or work experience, reducing the time it takes to complete their course.


Course Structure

To attain the Diploma of Education Studies, students will be required to complete 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) of Core studies.

Fees & Scholarships

As an international student at Victoria University, students will be required to pay their tuition fees up front each semester. The VU Block Model International Scholarship offers eligible international students up to 30% off tuition fees for their entire first year of study.

Careers

This course may help students find work as a teacher aide, supporting teachers in their work. Once theyve completed the Bachelor of Education (P-12), they could find a rewarding career in a public or private primary or secondary school.


Professional Accreditation/Industry Recognition

The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) approves this course as a pathway program. Registration with VIT is a legal requirement to teach in a school, early childhood education and care service, or Victorian childrens service.
