PhD in Health Sciences
The PhD in Health Sciences program aims to train a new generation of researchers and non-physicians with a comprehensive perspective on health science research, encouraging multidisciplinarity and promoting projects of scientific and technical merit.
Education Objectives
The program's education objectives include training students to identify research areas with higher scientific, technological, and impact potential. Students will be encouraged to conceptualize and elaborate innovative and competitive research proposals, integrating experimental methodologies that respond to scientific issues. During the course of study, students will also be trained to evaluate and discuss other projects, completing their scientific training and consolidating their capabilities as peer-reviewers.

Degree Pre-requisites
The study cycle leading to the Doctoral degree includes the development of an original thesis, specifically designed for this purpose and appropriate to the nature of the Health Sciences field. At the end of this study cycle, the student must undergo an academic examination involving the public defense, evaluation, and discussion of the final work (Thesis). The study cycle has a duration of 4 years on a full-time basis, and the doctoral student is expected to complete 60 ECTS per academic year, totaling 240 ECTS at the end of the 4 years.
Specific Admission Requirements
- Branch of Medicine:
- Holders of a Master's degree in Medicine or legally equivalent qualification
- Holders of a Bachelor's degree with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, recognized by the NMS|FCM Scientific Council as demonstrating the ability to undertake this study cycle
- Branch of Biomedicine:
- Holders of a Master's degree (or legal equivalent) in Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Health Technologies, or other scientific areas considered relevant by the Scientific Committee/Coordination of the PhD Programme in Health Sciences
- Holders of a Bachelor's degree with an especially relevant academic or scientific curriculum, recognized by the NMS|FCM Scientific Council as demonstrating the ability to undertake this study cycle
Conditions of Admittance
- Students can apply for access to the cycle of studies leading to the degree of doctor:
- Holders of the master's degree in Medicine or in a field of Health Sciences
- Exceptions to this rule, such as pre-Bologna graduates or holders of a significant academic, scientific, or professional curriculum, will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Program Coordination

Structure
The program's structure includes the development of an original thesis and the completion of course units. In the first-year curriculum, students must choose one of five restricted elective units, amounting to 3 ECTS. The student must complete 31 ECTS in course units and 206 ECTS for the thesis.
