Program Overview


Master in Women's Studies. Women in Society and in Culture

Education Objectives

The program aims to develop theoretical reflection and consolidate historical-literary and historical-cultural knowledge acquired in the 1st cycle. The objectives include:


  • To further develop theoretical reflection and to consolidate and complement historical-literary and historical-cultural knowledge acquired in the 1st cycle
  • To obtain theoretical and methodological competencies to carry out scientific research in the field of the literatures and cultures of Portuguese expression and their relation to other cultures
  • To acquire the ability to conceive and use original approaches to cultural and literary themes that have a theoretical foundation in the knowledge and competencies referred to in the preceding points
  • To develop the ability to apply acquired knowledge and competencies to new situations
  • To enhance the ability to identify problems or omissions in the knowledge acquired about Portuguese literature and culture, to find appropriate solutions and issue critical opinions in situations of limited or incomplete information
  • To acquire the necessary competencies to accurately analyse, present and synthesise knowledge, problems, procedures and the outcomes of research in both written and spoken form
  • To acquire the ability to design and develop a rigorous and systematic piece of research, leading to a written dissertation
  • To acquire knowledge and competencies to enable the student to continue learning autonomously throughout their life

Degree Pre-requisites

  • Acquire competencies and knowledge about womens rights to equip students for civic intervention in response to new social needs
  • Acquire competencies to enable academic knowledge to interact with organisations which intervene in social issues relevant to this area of specialisation
  • Acquire competencies for lifelong learning in this area of specialisation
  • Acquire general and multidisciplinary training in the field of Womens Studies and Gender Studies
  • Acquire the competencies required to deal with operative concepts of the areas under study, within an interdisciplinary context, using a national and international reference bibliography
  • Acquire the ability to use the knowledge, concepts and methodologies acquired to solve new problems in new and unfamiliar situations, in a wide range of multidisciplinary contexts, related to the field of Womens Studies and Gender Studies
  • Obtain knowledge and competencies to produce and present, in both spoken and written form, an academic paper in line with academic rules
  • Obtain competencies to present conclusions together with the knowledge and arguments underlying them to non-specialist audiences
  • Acquire competencies to enable students to design a piece of original research within the field of Womens Studies and Gender Studies, mastering the respective methodologies and work instruments
  • Acquire competencies to enable students to present the results of their research in the form of a dissertation, or a professional application in the context of practical work experience and the writing of the respective report

Conditions of Admittance

Application and access conditions to the cycle of studies reflect the conditions established in the national legislation, namely:


  • To hold a licenciado degree or legal equivalent
  • To hold a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVAFCSH
  • To hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH Applicants will be selected and ranked according to the criteria annually defined in the application edict

Evaluation Rules

  • A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the post-graduate diploma
  • The final grade of the post-graduate diploma is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Masters course
  • A final grade, expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20 as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale, is awarded for the Masters degree
  • The final grade of the Masters degree will be the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%
