Master in History of Art and Museology

The Master in History of Art and Museology is a postgraduate program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of art history, visual culture, and material culture. The program aims to equip students with the skills necessary for highly qualified scientific research in art history and professional performance in areas such as education, research, curatorship, communication, and consulting.

Education Objectives

The program's education objectives include:

1. Proficiency in the analysis of artistic production, visual culture, and material culture.
2. Understanding art history's specificity and its dialogue with other social sciences and humanities.
3. Critical mastery of key studies and main debates in the field of expertise at national and international levels.
4. Formulation and development of a relevant dissertation, work project, or internship with a report proposal in the area of specialization.
5. Development of skills necessary for highly qualified scientific research in art history.
6. Acquisition of skills necessary for highly qualified professional performance in areas such as education, research, curatorship, communication, and consulting.

Degree Pre-requisites

• Length: 2 years/4 semesters
• Total Credits: 120 credits (60 credits from curricular units + 60 credits from the non-teaching component)
• Non-Teaching Component Modes: Dissertation or Project Work or Internship with Report
• Curricular Units: 50 credits
• Free-Elective Optional: 10 credits (from curricular units of postgraduate level at FCSH/NOVA, UNL, or other national or foreign institutions of higher education under agreement)
• Follow-up Seminar: 5 ECTS in the 3rd semester
• Degree Level: Corresponds to the level 7 of the NQF and EQF - National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework

Conditions of Admittance

• Application and Access Conditions: Reflect the conditions established in national legislation, including holding a licenciado degree or legal equivalent, a foreign academic degree recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH, or an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum vitae recognized by the Scientific Council of NOVA FCSH.
• Selection and Ranking: Applicants are selected and ranked according to criteria annually defined in the application edict.

Evaluation Rules

• Final Grade: Expressed as a number between 10 and 20 on a scale of 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent on the ECTS grading scale.
• Post-Graduate Diploma: The final grade is the average, by credit, of the grades obtained in the course units in which the student obtained the 60 credits from the taught part of the Master's course.
• Master's Degree: The final grade is the average of the final grade of the taught part of the course, weighted to 40%, and the grade awarded to the dissertation, project work, or practical work experience report, weighted to 60%.
