Master of Arts in Criminology (Preparatory Programme)

Overview

The Master of Arts in Criminology (Preparatory Programme) is designed to provide students with the necessary prerequisites to pursue a Master's degree in Criminology. The programme is theory-based, allowing students to understand the different subject areas that constitute criminology.

  • Duration and Credits: 1 Year, 30 to 60 ECTS

Admission Criteria

  • The course shall be open to applicants in possession of:
    • A Bachelor degree obtained with at least Category II from the University of Malta in an area of study deemed relevant by the Board.
    • A Bachelor degree from another university recognized by the Senate, comparable to the qualification indicated above.
  • Admission of applicants shall be made conditional on the result of an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose.

    • Students are required to obtain not less than 30 ECTS credits and not more than 60 ECTS credits as directed by the Board.
    • Overall average mark of 55% or better prior to registration as regular students on the course.

Programme Aims

  • Provide students with a general and detailed knowledge and understanding of crime and criminology.
  • Equip students with knowledge and understanding of criminological theories and concepts.
  • Enable students to understand the role of enforcement agencies, courts, policing, and corrections in criminal justice.
  • Address issues in criminology, particularly the roles of offender-offence dynamics and society's responses to it.
  • Provide students with knowledge and understanding, and the capacity to use qualitative and quantitative methods of social research and social investigation.
  • Teach students how to utilize appropriate technology in criminology and criminal justice study and research.

Tuition Fees

  • Non-EU Applicants: Total tuition fees range from Eur 4,250 to Eur 8,500, depending on the number of study units registered for.

Career Prospects

Upon successfully completing the superseding Master's programme, students will be able to pursue a career as a criminologist.
