The Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Tourism Studies is a 5-year program that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the tourism industry. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become effective managers in the tourism sector.

The program is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019, and the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor of Arts (Honours) (Tourism Studies). The program is taught through a variety of methods, including lectures, field-based practical sessions, seminars, and supervised independent research.


Program Objectives

The main objective of the Tourism Studies program is to prepare students to become effective managers in the tourism sector while developing crucial transferable skills. The program aims to provide students with a sound grounding in various aspects of the tourism industry, together with an understanding of the social, economic, and cultural frameworks that are crucial to tourism management and planning.


Program Structure

The program is divided into five years, with each year consisting of two semesters. The program includes a range of compulsory and elective units, including:


  • Year 1: Introduction to Tourism, Tourism, Travel and Destinations, Work, Leisure and Society, and Malta and the Mediterranean: Culture and Identity
  • Year 2: Industry Placement, Critical Thinking and Communication, Basic Economics for Tourism, and The Business Environment of Tourism and Culture
  • Year 3: Malta's Tourism Development, Travel and Transportation Management, Data Gathering and Analysis, and Heritage and Cultural Tourism Management
  • Year 4: Tourism Enterprises: Skills, Creativity and Management, E-Tourism: Theory and Practice, Special Interest Tourism, and Museums and the Tourism Industry
  • Year 5: Dissertation, Human Resources and Work Relations in Tourism, Branding and Tourism, and Current Issues in Tourism

Admission Criteria

Applicants must meet the general entry requirements, which include a qualification comprising not less than 60 ECTS credits classified at Level 5 on the Malta Qualifications Framework, in an area of study related to Hospitality Management or Tourism Studies.


Tuition Fees

The tuition fee for non-EU nationals is Eur 4,250 per academic year.
