Program Overview

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to provide students with a broad range of disciplines required to practice as a professional engineer. The program offers substantial opportunity for practical work, well-balanced with theoretical instruction and lecturing.

Program Overview

The program provides an understanding of the fundamental principles of electrical, electronic, and control engineering. Throughout the degree course, students are given the mathematical skills required for engineering design and analysis. They are taught how to design and build smarter, more sustainable technologies, making them more efficient, reliable, and affordable, with the aim of contributing to society by improving the quality of life, especially related to health, comfort, and the environment.

Duration and Credits

  • The program has a maximum duration of 8 years.
  • The program consists of 240 ECTS credits.

Mode of Study

  • The program is offered on a part-time day basis.
  • The program is also available on a full-time basis.

Program Structure

The program covers various areas of electronic engineering, including:

  • Analogue and digital systems
  • Microcontrollers
  • Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)
  • Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI)
  • Radio Frequency (RF) and high-frequency electronics
  • Optoelectronics
  • Electromagnetics
  • Communications systems
  • Sensing and data acquisition

The program also covers the area of electrical engineering, which is mainly concerned with:

  • Circuit theory
  • Power electronics
  • Electrical machines
  • Energy conversion
  • Electromagnetics
  • Power engineering
  • Building services

Signals, Systems, and Control Engineering

The program includes the area of signals, systems, and control engineering, where students learn how to design and develop complex systems to operate automatically and autonomously. Examples include:

  • Control of mechatronic systems
  • Process control
  • Intelligent transportation systems
  • Industrial automation
  • Programmable Logic Control
  • Robot control systems

Learning Outcomes

As a graduate, students will:

  • Be able to demonstrate subject knowledge and understanding through standard methods of assessment.
  • Explain the concepts and fundamental theories and scientific principles of EEE.
  • Have knowledge of mathematical principles necessary for the application of engineering science.
  • Possess an intellectual inclination in using EEE science, mathematics, and computational methods to analyze engineering problems.
  • Have practical skills in adopting a systematic approach towards experimental investigation and analysis of results.
  • Have general transferable skills in working with technical uncertainty, adapting to current and future emerging technologies, self-development through continuous lifelong learning, and be able to communicate and work effectively within a team by taking various roles.

Admission Criteria

  • Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications.
  • Notes and any other requirements.
  • Open to applicants considered as "Adult Learners" (mature applicants) in terms of paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations.
  • Such applicants must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Faculty Admissions Committee that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit.
  • Applicants shall be required to submit with their application a letter written in English giving their motivation for applying for the Course together with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae (C.V.).

Tuition Fees

  • Annual Tuition Fees for non-EU applicants: Eur 5,400.

Career Opportunities

The engineering profession is a versatile profession, allowing employment opportunities in a wide variety of fields. As a graduate with an Electrical and Electronic Engineering Degree course, students will have broad-based fundamental engineering skills, thereby facilitating the possibility of job mobility across these fields. They will be able to find work amongst various local sectors of employment, including:

  • Manufacturing industries
  • Government agencies
  • Ministries
  • Building services
  • Power generation and distribution
  • Hospitals
  • Mobile and fixed telecommunication companies
  • Design and consultancy
  • Local R&D companies
  • Pharmaceutical plants
  • Hotels and hospitality
  • Software development
  • Online gaming
  • ICT infrastructure
  • Multimedia-related companies
  • Embedded systems design studios
  • Education and research institutions

Students may also opt to further their Electrical and Electronic Engineering knowledge by pursuing postgraduate studies either at the University of Malta or in overseas international universities. The Faculty of Engineering offers Masters and Ph.D. postgraduate degrees. Such postgraduate studies can be carried out either through a research route or by following one of the taught M.Sc. courses offered by the Faculty.
