Program Overview


Diploma in Agriculture

The Diploma in Agriculture is a one-year day course with regular University students enrolling each year. During the first semester, students will follow all study units and an optional study unit. During the second semester, students may follow one stream of specialisation, animal science, crop science, or herb science.


Course Overview

  • The course is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019, and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Diploma in Agriculture - Dip. Agric. - under the auspices of the Institute of Earth Systems.
  • By the end of the year, students will have gained knowledge and experience on rural sciences and food systems, be able to tackle agricultural problems, perceive agriculture as part of a rural, environmental, and urban ecosystem, and demonstrate their knowledge by carrying out an agricultural project.

Eligibility

  • To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall:
    • Satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language, and Mathematics.
    • Be in possession of the Pre-Tertiary Certificate in Agriculture from the University.

      • Choose ONE Elective Study-unit:
        • AGR1500: Crop Production Systems (6 ECTS)
        • AGR1600: Livestock Production Systems (6 ECTS)
      • Notes:
        • Students taking the Animal Science Elective Stream in Semester 2 should follow the study-unit AGR1500 in Semester 1.
        • Students taking the Agronomy and Plant Production or the Herb Science Elective Streams in Semester 2 should follow the study unit AGR1600 in Semester 1.
  • Semester 2
    • Compulsory Units:

      • AGR2900: Food Technology (6 ECTS)

Careers

  • As a Diploma graduate, you may be employed as a laboratory or agricultural officer with the Government, industry, or co-operatives.
  • You may choose to further your studies by following the Bachelor's degree offered by the Institute, and other Bachelor's degrees offered by University and other foreign universities.
  • Depending on the circumstances, you may follow a veterinary course at a foreign university.
