Certificate in Proof Reading: Maltese

The Certificate in Proof Reading: Maltese is a one-year part-time evening course that leads to a certificate in proofreading in Maltese. The course is organized by the University of Malta in collaboration with the National Council for the Maltese Language.

Course Overview

The course covers various aspects of the Maltese language, including the rules of writing, the history of the language, book design, and the use of Maltese on computers. Students will also learn about phonology, morphology, and syntax of the Maltese language.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the course, applicants must meet the general entry requirements of the University of Malta. International applicants must refer to the list of country-specific qualifications. Notes and other requirements may apply.

Admission Criteria

For applicants under the age of 23, the normal entry requirements of the University of Malta apply, and they must have passed Maltese at Advanced Level with at least a grade C. For applicants over the age of 23, they are considered as adult applicants, and no specific qualifications are required. However, if they do not have Maltese at Advanced Level with at least a grade C, they will be required to undergo an interview to assess their preparedness and disposition to follow the course.

Study Programme

The course consists of 8 study units, which together are worth 30 credits. The study units are:

• MAL1030: Ir-Regoli tal-Kitba Maltija fil-Prattika 1 (4 ECTS)
• MAL1031: Ir-Regoli tal-Kitba Maltija fil-Prattika 2 (6 ECTS)
• MAL1032: Elementi tal-Fonoloija tal-Malti (4 ECTS)
• MAL1040: Elementi tal-Morfoloija tal-Malti (4 ECTS)
• MAL1046: Elementi Sintattii u l-Puntejatura (2 ECTS)
• MAL1047: Aspetti Teknii fil-Preentazzjoni tal-Ktieb (2 ECTS)
• MAL1048: L-Godod Elettronii gall-Qari tal-Provi (2 ECTS)
• MAL1049: Proett Prattiku fil-Qari tal-Provi (6 ECTS)

Tuition Fees

The total tuition fees for non-EU applicants are Eur 4,250.

Career Opportunities

The course is considered a guarantee of quality for all proofreading work in Maltese and is required for employment in publishing, translation, and public broadcasting. In some fields, such as education, having the Certificate in Proof Reading: Maltese (MQF 5) may result in a pay increase.

Certification

Students who successfully complete the course will be awarded the Certificate in Proof Reading: Maltese (MQF 5) and a Certificate of Competence from the National Council for the Maltese Language. Their names will also be included in the official list of qualified proofreaders in Maltese.
