About Program

Program Overview

Certificate in Engineering Sciences

The Certificate in Engineering Sciences is a one-year course that provides students with thorough theoretical knowledge, skills, and competencies in mathematics and physics. The program aims to bring students' knowledge and understanding of these subjects to the required level, including study-units specific to engineering workshop and laboratory practices, as well as the concepts behind the design of an experiment.

Program Details

  • MQF Level: 4
  • Duration and Credits: 1 Year, 60 ECTS
  • Mode of Study: Full-time, with the option for part-time study (please consult the Registrar's website for more information)

Course Overview

The course includes subject-specific knowledge through units in mathematics, physics, and computer systems and programming. The study-units are delivered using a combination of lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions, allowing students to apply fundamental concepts to practical tasks and consolidate their understanding of key concepts within a practical environment. A hands-on engineering workshop complements theoretical skills with basic practical skills in mechanical fitting, machining, and manufacturing, as well as electrical installations and electronics.

Admission Criteria

General Entry Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Have obtained a minimum of 36 points in examinations taken as part of the Matriculation Certificate and be in possession of passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese, and Mathematics, together with a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Information Technology, Engineering Drawing, Graphical Communication, or other science
umeric subjects as approved by the Board.
  2. Be in possession of a diploma in an engineering domain which the Board deems as appropriate, classified at MQF Level 4, as well as passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese, and Mathematics.

Applicants may be required to attend an interview to assess whether they have the necessary aptitude to follow the course with profit.

Program Structure

The program is divided into two semesters, with compulsory units as follows:

Semester 1

  • ENR0006: Practical Engineering Technology (10 ECTS)
  • ENR0010: Experimental Setup and Procedures (3 ECTS)
  • ENR0001: Algebraic Techniques, Coordinate Geometry, and Differentiation (6 ECTS)
  • ENR0005: Principles of Electrical Circuit Theory and Electronics (6 ECTS)
  • ENR0007: Principles of Classic Mechanics (6 ECTS)
  • ENR0012: Trigonometry and Vectors (6 ECTS)

Semester 2

  • ENR0004: Further Calculus, Polar Coordinates, and Series (6 ECTS)
  • ENR0008: Principles of Thermodynamics (6 ECTS)
  • ENR0009: Principles of Waves and Quantum Theory (5 ECTS)
  • ENR0013: Matrices, Numerical Methods, and Probability (6 ECTS)

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the program, students will be able to:

  • Apply mathematical concepts to solve engineering-related problems.
  • Comprehend, organize, analyze, integrate, and connect the principles of classic mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical circuit theory, electronics, waves, and optics.
  • Apply the basics of computer systems and computer programming.
  • Apply good practices and sound methodologies to perform experimental procedures to solve engineering problems.
  • Develop engineering problem-solving skills.
  • Enhance science communication skills.

Career Opportunities

The program is primarily intended as a precursor to the B.Eng (Hons) program, allowing for personal development and increasing proficiency in English, independent study, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. However, graduates may also consider job opportunities such as procurement-related jobs or an Engineer's assistant.
