Program Overview
Bachelor of Humanities
The Bachelor of Humanities degree is designed to allow students to build their own undergraduate programme by registering for any study-units from any area of study, provided that timetable constraints are respected. This course enables students to venture outside the confines of the Faculty of Arts' areas of study and explore knowledge from other disciplines.
Programme Details
- The programme is offered on a full-time basis over three years, with an option for part-time study over six years.
- The programme consists of 180 ECTS credits.
- Students are required to register for 60 ECTS credits per year.
- A maximum of 45 ECTS credits can be taken from outside the Faculty of Arts, spread evenly over the years.
Study Programme
- In the first year, students can choose 60 ECTS credits from any area of study offered by the Faculty of Arts.
- In the second and third years, students must register for 60 ECTS credits from any area of study offered by the Faculty of Arts, with a maximum of 45 ECTS credits from outside the Faculty of Arts.
- Students must ensure that the number of study-units is evenly distributed over the first and second semesters.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of key concepts, debates, and methodologies within the humanities and their relevance to contemporary social and cultural issues.
- Critically analyse complex ideas, texts, and cultural phenomena, as well as evaluate diverse perspectives and construct well-reasoned arguments grounded in evidence and scholarly research.
- Communicate ideas effectively in both written and oral forms, using appropriate academic conventions.
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake independent research projects employing interdisciplinary methods and critical inquiry.
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural diversity and the social impact of humanistic inquiry, enabling engagement in academic, professional, and civic contexts.
Admission Criteria
- General Entry Requirements: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications.
- Notes and any other requirements: Applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' are required to sit for an interview.
- Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio.
Fees
- Fee per academic year for non-EU applicants: Eur 8,500.
Research Areas
The Bachelor of Humanities covers a vast array of cultures, periods, and disciplines, enabling students to develop an interdisciplinary appreciation of the humanities. Students will be able to locate topics within a precise historical and cultural context and as part of a complex web of interdisciplinary relationships.
Communication and Academic Skills Programme
The communication and academic skills programme complements students' main course of study, introducing them to writing and presenting in academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines, and developing their competences for future careers.
Governance
This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019, and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Bachelor of Humanities - B.Hums - under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.
