Program Overview


Introduction to the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Biomedical Science

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Biomedical Science is a comprehensive program that deals with the study of the underlying anatomy, physiology, and pathology of disease, as well as the techniques and procedures involved in the collection and analysis of samples taken from the human body. This program provides the diagnostic tools for medical care within the laboratory and is a vast and multidisciplinary area of healthcare.


Program Overview

  • The program is composed of a theoretical component and a strong practical component, covering five major areas of study:
    • Cellular Pathology: the study and identification of pathological conditions of cells and tissues
    • Clinical Biochemistry and Genetics: the study of the levels of biochemical compounds in the body and the study of genetics, genomics, and molecular biology to understand the inherited basis of disease
    • Haematology: the study of both the cellular and soluble components of blood
    • Medical Microbiology/Virology: the study of microorganisms that cause disease
    • Transfusion Medicine: the study of the methodology involved in the collection, preservation, storage, testing, and administration of blood and blood products
    • Immunology: the study of diseases and disorders of the immune system

Program Structure

The program is designed to be completed over four years, with each year comprising two semesters. The structure includes:


  • Year 1: Introduction to foundational subjects such as biomedical biochemistry, cell biology, practical techniques, anatomy, chemistry, microbiology, and physiology.
  • Year 2: Builds upon the foundational knowledge with more advanced subjects including clinical biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, haematopathology, and pathology.
  • Year 3: Focuses on specialized areas such as transfusion medicine, immunology, epidemiology, research methods, and advanced practicals in various disciplines.
  • Year 4: Includes advanced practicals, laboratory management, ethics, applied microbiology, immunohaematology, clinical biochemistry, cellular pathology, and a dissertation.

Admission Requirements

  • General Entry Requirements: Refer to country-specific qualifications.
  • Special Course Requirements: Passes at Advanced Level at Grade C or better in Biology and Chemistry, and a pass at Intermediate Level in one of the following subjects: Applied Mathematics, Computing, Information Technology, Physics, or Pure Mathematics.
  • Notes and Other Requirements: The number of students is limited to 24. Students must undergo an occupational health assessment during the first year and may be required to submit a Police Certificate of Conduct.
