Program Overview


Introduction to the Diploma in the Laws of Procedure

The Diploma in the Laws of Procedure is an undergraduate course that provides comprehensive knowledge of and training in the core legal subjects related to procedural law. This course requires students to acquire a detailed knowledge of all the laws of procedure.


Programme Details

  • The programme of studies extends over a period of two years of part-time studies.
  • Lectures are held in the evening, normally spread over two days a week.
  • The course is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019, and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Diploma in the Laws of Procedure under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws.

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing the Diploma in the Laws of Procedure, students should be able to:


  • Learn and apply all the laws of procedure, including civil procedure, administrative procedure, constitutional procedure, criminal procedure, ecclesiastical procedure, European Union procedure, and industrial procedure.
  • Know how to apply these laws in practice.
  • Understand the rationale behind the procedures set out in the above laws.
  • Be able to decide which is the appropriate procedure to be applied in a given circumstance and distinguish one procedure from another.
  • Develop their intellectual skills through applying what they have learned in class during exams or when submitting assignments, presentations, and other methods of assessment.

Year 1 Curriculum

  • Semester 1:
    • CML1000: Law of Commercial Procedure: Company, Shipping, Aviation, and Intellectual Property Procedure (4 ECTS)
    • CRL1100: Criminal Procedure 1: Of the Authorities to which Criminal Justice is Entrusted (4 ECTS)
    • CVL1106: The Law of Civil Procedure 1: The Organization of the Courts of Justice of Civil Jurisdiction (4 ECTS)
    • MCT1000: Research Methods and Legal Writing (2 ECTS)
  • Semester 2:
    • CRL1101: Criminal Procedure 2: Of Matters Applicable to All Criminal Trials (4 ECTS)
    • CVL1100: The Law of Arbitration and Mediation (4 ECTS)
    • CVL1107: The Law of Civil Procedure 2: Of the Ordinary Mode of Procedure in Contentious Matters (4 ECTS)
    • PBL1102: Administrative Procedure (4 ECTS)
  • Requirement for regular progression to Year II: 30 ECTS credits

    • CVL1102: The Law of Procedure before the Civil Court (Family Section) (4 ECTS)
    • CVL1104: The Law of Civil Procedure 3: Of Evidence and Pleas (4 ECTS)
    • PBL1019: Quasi Judicial Tribunals (4 ECTS)
  • Semester 2:
    • CVL1103: The Law of Procedure before the Civil Court (Voluntary Jurisdiction Section) (4 ECTS)
    • CVL1108: The Law of Civil Procedure 4: Of Precautionary Acts, Security, Discontinuance, and Legal Aid (4 ECTS)
    • ECL1000: EU Law of Procedure (4 ECTS)
    • PBL1101: Constitutional Procedure (2 ECTS)
    • PLC1200: Canonical Procedures before Ecclesiastical Tribunals (2 ECTS)
  • Requirement for successful completion of Year II: 30 ECTS credits
  • Requirement for the award of the Diploma in the Laws of Procedure: 60 ECTS credits

Admission Criteria

  • General Entry Requirements: Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications.
  • Notes and any other requirements: Applicants admitted as "Adult Learners" (mature applicants) must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Board that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the course with profit.
