Program Overview
Certificate in Engineering Sciences
The Certificate in Engineering Sciences is a two-year program that provides students with thorough theoretical knowledge, skills, and competencies in mathematics and physics. The program aims to bring students' knowledge and understanding of these subjects to the required level, including study-units specific to engineering workshop and laboratory practices.
Program Overview
- The program is offered on a part-time basis, with the option to complete it in two years of study.
- Students are required to register for not less than 25 ECTS credits in any academic year, selected from the study-units already offered in the full-time programme.
- The program may be completed in a maximum of 2 years of study.
- In collaboration with the Board of the Faculty, the spread of study-units across each academic year may be customized in accordance with each student's exigencies.
Admission Criteria
- Applicants shall have obtained a minimum of 36 points in examinations taken as part of the Matriculation Certificate and be in possession of passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese, and Mathematics.
- Applicants shall also have a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Information Technology, Engineering Drawing, Graphical Communication, or other science
umeric subjects as approved by the Board. - Alternatively, applicants may be in possession of a diploma in an engineering domain which the Board deems as appropriate, classified at MQF Level 4, as well as passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese, and Mathematics.
- Applicants may be required to attend an interview to assess whether they have the necessary aptitude to follow the Course with profit.
Program Details
- The program consists of 60 ECTS credits.
- The mode of study is part-time day, with the option to complete it on a full-time basis.
- The program is governed by the Certificate in Engineering Sciences Course Regulations, 2020 under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply mathematical concepts of coordinate geometry, vectors, matrices, calculus, trigonometry, complex numbers, numerical methods, and series to solve engineering-related problems.
- Comprehend, organize, analyze, integrate, and connect the principles of classic mechanics, thermodynamics, electrical circuit theory, electronics, waves, and optics.
- Apply the basics of computer systems and computer programming.
- Apply good practices and sound methodologies to perform experimental procedures to solve engineering problems.
- Develop engineering problem-solving skills.
- Enhance science communication skills.

- The program is primarily intended as a precursor to the B.Eng (Hons) programme.
