Program Overview


Master of Science in Materials Engineering

The Master of Science in Materials Engineering is a flexible program designed to expand and supplement students' skill sets in a relatively short period. The program is suitable for individuals who have recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in engineering or science, as well as those who have been working in industry or the government sector.


Program Overview

The program requires 30 credit hours to earn the degree. Most classes are offered after 5 p.m. for the convenience of working students, and selected courses are also available online.


Degree Information and Courses

Two options are available for the Materials Engineering M.S. degree:


  • Thesis option: 24 semester hours of course work (8 classes) and 6 semester hours of research credit.
  • Non-thesis option (suggested for International Students): 30 semester hours of course work (10 classes). Students will learn from materials experts, including engineers and scientists from the University, as well as the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), and local industries.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the online application, applicants should submit:


  1. Official academic records of all previously attended colleges or universities.
  2. Two letters of recommendation from professors or employers.
  3. A personal statement or résumé.
  4. Results from the GRE are not required, but candidates are welcome to submit a score in support of their application. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree from an accredited program in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, or other appropriate program of study. A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. Some programs may require higher GPAs for admission, and applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be admitted on a conditional basis.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with the following approximate general deadlines:


  • Fall Term: June 15
  • Spring Term: November 15
  • Summer Term: March 15
