Program Overview


Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Graduate Certificate program is designed for students who have graduated from the University of Dayton School Counseling (M.S.E.) program. Completion of both programs qualifies students to sit for the National Counselor Examination.

The program aims to broaden the scope of education, allow for job variability, enhance professional versatility, and achieve career goals. It helps students hone their passion and advance as professionals. Students who complete the program may become dually licensed in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling.


Certificate Information and Courses

The certificate program requires students to begin in the summer term. The program consists of the following courses:


  • EDC 631 Diagnosis of Mental and Emotional Disorders (3 credits) in Summer Term, Year 1
  • EDC 521 Intro to Clinical Mental Health Counseling & Ethics (3 credits) and EDC 623 Abnormal Psychology (3 credits) in Fall Term, Year 2
  • EDC 635 Couples & Family Counseling (3 credits) or EDC 671 Biological Neurological Bases of Behavior (3 credits) and EDC 683 Treatment of Mental and Emotional Disorders (3 credits) in Spring Term, Year 2
  • EDC 630 Evaluation of Mental and Emotional Disorders (3 credits) and EDC 598 Internship (2 credits) in Summer Term, Year 2
  • EDC 598 Internship (2 credits) in Fall Term and Spring Term, Year 3

Application and Admission Requirements

To qualify for the program, students must:


  1. Apply through the university's online admission account, selecting the summer term and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Certificate in School of Education and Health Sciences) major.
  2. Obtain a letter of recommendation from one of the university's School Counseling program faculty.
  3. Meet one of the following criteria:
  • Be in the final semester of the university's School Counseling program and in good academic standing.
  • Have graduated from the university's School Counseling program within the past five years.
  • If graduated from the university's School Counseling program over five years ago, demonstrate consistent work experience as a school counselor.
