Geotechnical Engineering Master's Degree Program
The Geotechnical Engineering master's degree program is a specialization within the Civil Engineering program at OsloMet. Admission Requirements
To apply for this master's program, applicants need:
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, marine engineering, or an equivalent engineering discipline, including:
- 25 ECTS in mathematics
- 7.5 ECTS in physics, solid mechanics, building physics, and/or thermodynamics
- 5 ECTS in statistics
- An average grade of at least C (according to the ECTS grading scale) on the bachelor's degree
- English proficiency, which can be demonstrated by:
- English from a Norwegian or Nordic upper secondary school and a bachelor's degree from Norway or the Nordic countries
- At least 4 in English from Norwegian upper secondary school
- Proof of English proficiency
How to Apply
Applicants apply via Sĝknadsweb, where they fill in their details and upload all required documents. Application deadlines are:
- 1 March: Early admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
- 15 April: Ordinary admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
Program Cost
For students from the EU/EEA/EFTA, the only cost of this program is the semester fee of approximately NOK 1,000, which is paid each semester. For students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA, there are tuition fees in addition to the semester fee.
Computer System Requirements
Students in this program need a laptop with Windows 11. The recommended specifications include:
- Operating System: Windows 11
- Graphics (GPU): At minimum Nvidia RTX 3050 or Radeon RX6600, with at least 6GB of video memory
- Memory (RAM): At least 16GB, preferably 24GB or more
- Processor: Core i5 with several cores or equivalent, preferably better, with a clock speed of 2GHz or higher
- Storage: 500GB or more, with a recommended SSD
Program Content
The Geotechnical Engineering program concerns the engineering of earth materials to find solutions for various problems. It provides students with the ability to handle tasks through all phases of geotechnical designs, from site investigation and soil testing to proposed engineering solutions and design validation.
How the Program is Taught
The program is divided into compulsory and optional courses, in addition to a master's thesis, and stimulates collaboration, self-activity, reflection, and new thinking. Students participate in academic discussions and are encouraged to participate actively in the teaching.
Program Structure
The program is structured over two years, with various courses and a master's thesis. The overview of the program structure is updated each spring and shows the courses available to current students.
Exchange
OsloMet welcomes international students and offers information about exchange opportunities on its student website. Incoming mobility students can select courses counting for at least 30 ECTS for one semester or 60 ECTS for two semesters.
Career
Graduates of this program have expertise in high demand in both the private and public sectors. They can work in advisory engineering firms, contractors, construction clients, municipalities, and research institutes. The degree also qualifies students for further studies at the doctoral degree level.
