Introduction to the Smart Water Engineering Program

The Smart Water Engineering program is a specialization in the Master's Degree Programme (MSc) in Civil Engineering. This masters specialisation offers advanced studies in digital water infrastructure, including process and hydraulic engineering, delivered by industry-leading experts.

Program Details

  • Location: Pilestredet Campus, Oslo
  • Duration: 2 years
  • Scope: Full-time
  • ECTS credits: 120
  • Semester: Autumn
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Places: 30

Admission Requirements

To apply for this master programme, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electronic engineering, environmental engineering, marine engineering, or mechanical engineering
  • 25 ECTS in mathematics
  • 7.5 ECTS in physics, solid mechanics, building physics, and/or thermodynamics
  • 5 ECTS in statistics
  • An average grade of at least C (according to the ECTS grading scale) on your bachelor's degree
  • English proficiency: English from a Norwegian or Nordic upper secondary school and a bachelor's degree from Norway or the Nordic countries, or proof of English proficiency

How to Apply

You apply via S鷦nadsweb, where you fill in your details and upload all the required documents. Application deadlines are:

  • 1 March: early admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway
  • 15 April: ordinary admission for applicants from the European Union, the European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland, and for non-EU/EEA citizens with a Norwegian national ID number residing in Norway

Program Cost

For students from the EU/EEA/EFTA, the only cost of this programme is the semester fee of approximately NOK 1,000, which you pay each semester of the programme. For these students, there are no tuition fees. For students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA, there are tuition fees in addition to the semester fee.

Computer System Requirements

In this study program, you need a laptop with Windows 11. The laptop should have:

  • A "gaming laptop" with powerful graphics cards suitable for modeling
  • At least 16GB of memory, preferably 24GB or more
  • A processor that is Core i5 with several cores or equivalent, preferably better
  • A clock speed of 2GHz or higher
  • A hard drive that is 500GB or more, preferably SSD

Program Content

Smart water engineering focuses on design, operation, and control of urban water networks and treatment systems. Developed in close collaboration with industry partners, this MSc programme specialisation addresses skill gaps in the public and private sectors by combining hydraulic and process engineering.

How the Program is Taught

The program includes compulsory courses in addition to a master's thesis and stimulates collaboration, self-activity, reflection, and new thinking. You will participate in academic discussions and are encouraged to participate in the active learning programme in-person as much as possible.
