The Study of Professions PhD Program

The Study of Professions is a multidisciplinary field of research with great theoretical and methodological diversity. This PhD program focuses on both general and specific features of professions and their professional practice.

Program Description

The program recruits doctoral candidates from many different disciplines, such as sociology, philosophy, educational science, history, political science, and economics. As a doctoral fellow in the Study of Professions, you can expect:

Admission Requirements

Admission to the program requires funding. All vacant scholarship positions are published on the university's website. The admission requirements include:

• A masters degree or equivalent (120 ECTS)
• Candidates with shorter master programs might be considered for admission after a comprehensive assessment of their credentials

Program Structure

The program is full-time and lasts for 3 years. It is located at the Pilestredet Campus in Oslo. The language of instruction is Norwegian. The program consists of 180 ECTS credits.

PhD Courses

All candidates must complete 30 ECTS in PhD courses as part of the 180 ECTS required for the doctorate degree. The Centre for the Study of Professions offers the following PhD subjects:

• Etiske dilemmaer i helse- og sosialfaglig arbeid (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
• Profesjoner, klasse, kjřnn og (velferds-)stat i det 19. og 20. ĺrhundre (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
• Research ethics (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
• Kvalitative metoder: intervju og deltagende observasjon (PhD course, 1 semester, 10 ECTS credits)
• Vitenskapsteori (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
• Statistiske metoder og analysedesign (PhD course, 1 semester, 10 ECTS credits)
• Innfřring i profesjonsteori (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
• Fordypning i profesjonsteori (PhD course, 1 semester, 5 ECTS credits)
