The Publishing Game PhD Course

The Publishing Game is a PhD course focused on writing and publishing an article in a peer-reviewed journal. The course is recommended for candidates working on an early draft or outline of a journal article.

Course Contents

The course covers topics including:

• Characteristics of a publishable paper: novelty, framing, contribution
• Formulating a research question suitable for the journal article format
• Structuring the article
• Choosing the right journal for the article
• Surviving a rejection
• Managing the review process and responding to reviewers comments
• Co-authoring practices
• Ethics in writing and publishing research

The main purpose of the course is to provide a better understanding of the publishing game. Active participation is required, and participants will be assigned preparatory work, including preparing an outline or draft of a research article.

Admission Requirements

The course is open to a maximum of 15 participants and is only available to PhD candidates at the Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) and the Centre for the Study of Professions (SPS). Priority is given to applicants who can attend both days of the course.

Programme

The programme for the course includes:

• Understanding the rules of the game: Identifying and entering the conversations in the field
• Finding the conversations in the field: Selecting a journal and experiences from the peer review process
• Writing for publication an editors perspective
• Work with articles in groups
• Co-authoring
• IMRAD: Analysis and argument
• Summing up and evaluations

Compulsory Preparation

Participants must submit a draft of a research article, focusing on the introduction and framing, by a specified deadline. The draft will be read by fellow PhD candidates and a senior reader, and discussed in small groups during the course.

Language

The course language is English or Norwegian/Scandinavian languages, depending on the participants preferences.

Costs

The course is free of costs. However, registered participants who do not attend or make use of agreed accommodation/meals will be invoiced for these expenses.

Course Certificate

After completing the course, participants will receive a course certificate.
