Introduction to the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts
The Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts is a three-year program offering mentor-guided training in Designing and Technical Production for Live Performance.
Program Description
The graduate program in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film combines academic depth with professional training to prepare students for professional and academic success. The program screens applicants for admission at nationwide University/Resident Theatre Association (URTA) interviews and conducts on-campus conferences with applicants, where portfolio presentations are also organized. Individuals at any stage of their current careers or career planning who are interested in design and/or technical production emphases should prepare and provide evidence of current experience, ability, and/or technical skills.
Curriculum
The Carson School offers graduate courses in advanced scene design, lighting design, costume design, computer-aided design, drafting, pattern-making rendering, stage rigging, digital motion graphics, and stage technology. The curriculum also includes courses on dramatic theory, play analysis, and theatre history. Classes are held in the historic Temple Building, and productions take place in the School's numerous venues, which include the Howell Theatre (Proscenium), the Studio Theatre (Flexible Black Box), and Lab Theatre (Small Black Box).
Admission Requirements
Standard Requirements for All Graduate Programs
- Application for Admission with a $50 non-refundable application fee.
- Transcripts (unofficial): Uploaded as part of the application form. If International, uploads must include all college- or university-level transcripts or mark sheets (records of courses and marks earned), with certificates, diplomas, and degrees plus certified English translations.
- Verification of English proficiency if the applicant's native language is not English.
- Financial information if the applicant is not a US citizen and expects an F or J visa.
Additional Requirements Specific to This Program

- Personal Statement: Discuss and explain your interest in theatre design and/or technology (350 words).
- Portfolio: Link to online or digital portfolio is preferred.
- Writing Sample: Provide up to 2 samples of your writing which demonstrate your capacity in communication.
- Research Interest: Indicate your area of interest: Scene Design, Lighting Design, Costume Design, or Theatre Technology.
- Faculty: Review current faculty and their areas of research. Identify a faculty member with whom you would like to work.
- Three letters of recommendation from individuals who know your work best, such as former teachers, professors, employers, or supervisors.
Admission Process
In addition to the requirements in the application form, all Theatre Arts MFA candidates who make it through the screening process must complete an interview and visit the campus.

Graduate Program Details
The masters degree under Option A requires a thesis and is most appropriate for students preparing for careers in research and scholarly work or additional academic pursuits beyond the masters degree. Under Option A, a student must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours, consisting of 20 to 24 credit hours of regular coursework, plus a thesis equivalent to 6 to 10 credit hours. At least one-half of the credit hours required for the degree, including the thesis, must be in the major.
The masters degree under Option B does not require a thesis and is most appropriate for students pursuing practice-based or professional careers in which the masters degree provides suitable training. Under Option B, a student must earn a minimum of 30 credit hours. At least one-half of the credit hours required for the degree must be in the major.
Accelerated Master's Programs allow University of NebraskaLincoln undergraduate students to pursue this degree in an abbreviated timeline. Dual Degree programs allow students to be admitted to two degree programs simultaneously with approval of each Graduate Program Committee and the Dean(s) for Graduate Studies.
