Program Overview
Introduction to Printmaking at Nebraska
The printmaking program at the University of Nebraska offers students the opportunity to discover the creative potential of various print media, including intaglio, lithography, silk screen, and relief, as well as non-toxic techniques. Students can expand their definitions of print by learning new technologies and alternative presentations, and develop their creative process through skillful application and conceptual development.
Program Overview
The College of Fine and Performing Arts, specifically the Hixson Lied College, offers a major in Art with a focus on printmaking. The program requires 120 credit hours for completion.
Program Features
- The BA/BFA program has approximately 60-70 undergraduate students working in the printmaking studios each semester.
- The MFA program is a three-year, 60-credit hour course of study, with graduate students furnished with semi-private studios, approximately 180 square feet in size.
- Most printmaking graduate students are funded through graduate assistantships during the course of their stay.
Facilities and Resources
The printmaking and book arts facilities at UNL occupy the top floor of the Woods Art Building, situated in the heart of the main city campus. The facilities include:
- Five large rooms with full-length walls of windows, creating exceptionally well-lit and inviting work spaces.
- Separate rooms for etching, lithography, letterpress, and book arts, with large work tables in each area.
Prestigious Visiting Artists
The Hixson-Lied Visiting Artist Series brings six to eight nationally known artists to campus each semester, who teach a lecture class, give a presentation, and provide critique.
Study Abroad Opportunities
Students have the opportunity to take classes around the world, taught by School of Art faculty. Previous faculty-led trips have included destinations such as London, Paris, Tokyo, Italy, and Greece.

- Art of the Book (343): History and materials of book art and design, traditional and new print and craft technologies associated with book production.
- Special Topics in Printmaking (PRNT 491): Special topics in printmaking, advanced level.
- Printmaking Thesis Hours (PRNT 499): Culminating experience in Area of Emphasis to produce work for the Capstone Art Exhibition.
