Program Overview
Latin Course at the University of Vienna
The Latin Course is designed to prepare students for the Latin Supplementary Exam at the University of Vienna. The course is offered by the Language Center of the University of Vienna and is tailored to meet the needs of students who require the Latinum for their studies.
Course Description
The Latin Course covers the entire Latin grammar, basic vocabulary, and a specific translation method. The course is interactive, with a focus on the correct translation method and the correct formulation of a German translation. Students will work with a script specially developed for the Language Center, which includes original texts and quotations from the last 40 years of Latin exams.
Course Dates and Fees
The course is offered in two formats:
- A 10-week course from March to May or October to December, with 60 units per course, held 2 times a week.
- A 4-week course in February or September, with 60 units per course, held 5 times a week. The tuition fee for the course is EUR 520 per course, including the learning materials.

Course Materials
The script used in the course was created by the Language Center in 2021 and is regularly updated with new exam texts. The script is included in the course price and will be handed out on the first day of the course. Additionally, students will need a Latin-German dictionary, which can be purchased separately.
ECTS Points
The Latin Course at the Language Center does not conclude with an examination, and no ECTS points are awarded.
Instructor
The course is taught by Martin Tschurtschenthaler, the head of the Latin branch at the Language Center. He is the author of the script used in the course and has designed the Latin Course at the Language Center. Martin Tschurtschenthaler lectures at the University of Vienna in Latin Studies and works independently as an Ancient Greek teacher for adults.
