Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor's Degree in African Studies
The Bachelor's degree in African Studies is a comprehensive program that encompasses various aspects of African languages, literatures, history, and societies. This program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the complexities and diversities of Africa, preparing them for a wide range of careers in fields such as research, education, international relations, and development.
Program Structure
- The Bachelor's degree in African Studies comprises 180 ECTS credits, with 120 ECTS credits to be completed within the Bachelor's degree curriculum of African Studies.
- The remaining 60 ECTS credits are to be completed within extension curricula.
- Students are required to choose between African Linguistics, African Literature, and African History and Societies as their specialty.
- The program includes courses such as Basics of African Studies - Linguistics, Basics of African Studies - Literatures, and Basics of African Studies - History.
- Language teaching is an integral part of the program, with students having the option to choose between two versions of language courses.
Admission Procedure
- The admission procedure for the Bachelor's degree in African Studies is processed centrally by the University of Vienna.
- Prospective students must submit their applications within the specified deadlines.
- Information on the admission procedure can be found on the University of Vienna's website.
Registration for Courses and Exams
- Students can register for courses and exams online through the university's course directory.
- Registration periods are specified for each course and exam, and students are advised to register within these periods to secure their places.
- For courses with continuous assessment of course work, registration is mandatory, and attendance is compulsory.
Extension Curricula
- Extension curricula (EC) comprise either 15 or 30 ECTS credits, depending on the respective EC.
- Students can choose from a wide range of ECs offered by different departments, but they cannot choose the EC in African Studies as it is part of the normal study plan.
- Registration for ECs is required, and students can only register if they are enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program that prescribes the completion of an EC.
Alternative Extensions
- Instead of an EC, students can complete alternative extensions of a maximum of 15 ECTS credits.
- Alternative extensions can be chosen freely, and they do not need to fit together or be part of the BA African Studies program.
Recognition of Courses
- Students can have exams from other courses recognized for their African Studies program.
- To do this, they need to download and fill in the required forms and send them to the Studies Service Unit along with their transcript of records.
Completion of the Bachelor's Degree
- To complete the Bachelor's degree, students must ensure that they have fulfilled all the requirements, including the completion of the extension curriculum and alternative extensions.
- Students must check their electronic record of examinations to ensure that each exam matches with the right module.
- The final documents can be obtained by sending the updated transcript of records and the Statistik Austria confirmation to the specified email address.
