Program Overview
University Program Information
The University of Vienna has introduced significant changes to its study regulations, effective September 1. These changes aim to provide students with more flexibility and freedom in their academic pursuits.
Alternative Expansions in Bachelor Studies
A key innovation is the introduction of alternative expansions in bachelor studies. Instead of the previously required modules W2 (Bachelor Informatik) or WW (Bachelor Wirtschaftsinformatik), students can now choose to complete alternative expansions. This means that students can select from a wide range of courses offered by the University of Vienna, including those outside of their primary field of study.
- Alternative expansions can be completed in the form of individual courses or entire expansion curricula.
- Students can choose courses from the university's entire range of offerings, with few restrictions.
- Courses do not need to have a direct connection to the field of informatik.
However, there are some limitations to be considered:
- Courses used for admission to the study program cannot be recognized as alternative expansions.
- Prerequisite requirements for courses and exams still apply, even if completed as alternative expansions.
Procedure for Completing Alternative Expansions
To complete alternative expansions, students should follow these steps:
- When possible, select the "Alternative Expansions" module during course registration in u:space.
- For courses from the SPL5, choose a different module and then email the SSC to request assignment to alternative expansions.
- If self-registration is not possible, email the SSC to request registration.
Further Changes
In addition to the introduction of alternative expansions, several other changes have been made to the study regulations:
- Study-supporting courses can now be taken during the STEOP phase, with ECTS credits awarded.
- Module exams for STEOP will typically have three exam dates per semester.
- The regulation explicitly states that there is no attendance requirement for exam-oriented courses, unless specified in u:find before the start of the semester.
- Students must be informed about course goals, form, content, dates, methods, evaluation criteria, and permitted aids before the registration deadline.
- It is now possible to lose supervision for a master's thesis if no progress is shown and no completion schedule is submitted in agreement with the supervisor.
Study Regulations
The new version of the study regulations can be found on the university's website. The changes aim to provide students with more flexibility and autonomy in their academic pursuits, while also ensuring that they are well-informed and supported throughout their studies.
