Program Overview


Master's Program in Musicology

The Master's program in Musicology is a 4-semester program that builds on a Bachelor's degree in Musicology. The program consists of 120 ECTS and leads to the degree of Master of Arts (MA).


Program Structure

The program is divided into several modules, including:


  • Pflichtmodulgruppen (62 ECTS): Ethnomusikologie, Historische Musikwissenschaft, Systematische Musikwissenschaft
  • Pflichtmodule MUS (14 ECTS) and PRX (10 ECTS)
  • Mastermodule MAS with Masterarbeit and Masterpr㘹ung (34 ECTS)

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Master's program, applicants must have:


  • Completed a Bachelor's degree in Musicology (Version 2011 or 2016) at the University of Vienna
  • Completed a music-related Bachelor's degree at a recognized post-secondary education institution (university, college, conservatory)
  • Demonstrated equivalence in terms of scope and content to the Bachelor's degree in Musicology offered at the University of Vienna

Additional Requirements

Applicants who have not completed a Bachelor's degree in Musicology at the University of Vienna may need to:


  • Complete additional coursework (up to 30 ECTS)
  • Demonstrate proficiency in music theory, history, and research methods
