Recognition and Prospects
- Professional Recognition: The BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering programme has been granted full accreditation by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
- Career Prospects: Graduates can find employment in medical device industrial settings, hospitals, government departments, medical device regulatory firms, or other biomedical institutions. They can also pursue careers in professional clinical practice, basic and applied research in engineering, biology, or medicine.
Curriculum
- The curriculum includes both academic studies and practical training in biomedical engineering.
- All admitted students will embark on a Common Year 1 curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering, which provides them with foundational knowledge of engineering technology.
- Year 2 subjects further establish students fundamental knowledge in biomedical engineering, covering crucial topics such as bioelectronics, biomechanics, and computer programming.
- The Scheme offers two specialized streams starting from Year 2: Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Biomedical Engineering with Prosthetics and Orthotics (BME with P&O).
- Year 3 subjects further strengthen students knowledge of biomedical engineering, with opportunities to combine biomedical and engineering concepts and develop critical inquiry and thinking skills.
- Year 4 subjects provide students the opportunity to synthesize their learning, solve complex problems, and prepare for the next step whether that is launching their biomedical engineering careers or pursuing further education.
Secondary Major Details
- Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics (AIDA): Develops students holistic understanding of AIDAs growing role in healthcare.
- Secondary Major in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE): Develops students spirit and mindset of innovation and entrepreneurship, whether it is applied to the commercialization of healthcare technologies or to problem-solving in general.
- Students must apply to and obtain approval from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, not later than the commencement of the second year of study, to be admitted to the Secondary Major.
