Program Overview

Introduction to the Program

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nursing and Master of Nursing programmes are pre-registration programmes designed to prepare students for registration as Registered (General) Nurses with The Nursing Council of Hong Kong. The clinical education provided by the School is aligned with the programme's intended learning outcomes, offering students a variety of nursing experiences ranging from simple to complex, and from general nursing to specialty training.

Clinical Education and Experience

  • The School provides clinical learning opportunities in different settings, allowing students to gain experience in various aspects of nursing.
    • Students can participate in overseas exchange programmes to broaden their horizons and gain international experience.
    • The programme includes state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, such as high-fidelity adult and paediatric simulators and simulated wards.
  • Clinical learning opportunities are provided in collaboration with the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, the Department of Health, and other organisations, clinics, and hospitals offering primary to tertiary health care services.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Virtual-Reality Learning Experience

The Virtual Hospital is an immersive VR-assisted experiential learning system that includes over 1,200 combinations of randomised situations and multiple-choice questions, mimicking real-life multi-bed wards with chaotic, incidental contexts and clinical pitfalls. This system enables students to develop clinical competence, build multitasking skills, and enhance prioritisation judgment and effective decision-making abilities.

Strengthening Clinical Reasoning

The clinical reasoning framework is integrated throughout the curriculum, emphasizing the application of theoretical and clinical knowledge in clinical settings. This approach aims to strengthen students' critical thinking and clinical decision-making abilities.

Preparing Students for Clinical Placement

  • All nursing subjects are closely linked with clinical placement, which begins in the second year and continues until the completion of subjects related to basic nursing care.
  • Prior to clinical placement, students participate in Pre-clinical Workshops to sharpen their knowledge and skills.

Inter-Professional Education

Inter-professional Education is promoted in classrooms and simulated wards, allowing undergraduate students from the Faculty of Health and Social Science to join in both classroom and extracurricular activities. This approach enhances students' communication skills, leadership abilities, and mutual respect between healthcare professionals, preparing them for future collaborative practices.

Expanding Students' Horizons

  • Offshore Clinical Placement Exchange programmes are offered, enabling students to work and study in overseas and Chinese hospitals.
  • Local and overseas Primary Health Care experiences gained through Service-Learning Subjects are recognised as clinical hours.

Developing Nursing Skills

  • The School pioneered the use of high-fidelity patient simulators in the late 1990s.
  • The Dorothy WONG Intensive Care Laboratory, renovated in 2017, is a fully furnished intensive care unit with state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Simulated clinical experiences are a major learning and teaching strategy in all nursing therapeutics subjects.
  • Simulated Wards and Gerontological Nursing Laboratory are available for students' learning and practice in real-life settings.

Mentorship

Throughout the second to third year of studies, students are supervised by teaching staff or clinical teachers nominated by hospitals as instructors in both subacute and acute settings for medical and surgical nursing. Honorary Clinical Instructors coach senior year students in specialty placement and during the long consolidation in their final year, bridging the theory and practice gap and facilitating the transition from students to staff nurses.
