Program Overview


Master of Science in Building Services Engineering

The Master of Science in Building Services Engineering is a postgraduate program offered by the Faculty of Construction and Environment at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.


Program Overview

The program is designed to provide advanced knowledge and skills in building services engineering, with a focus on the design, installation, and maintenance of building services systems. The program aims to position PolyU as the primary provider of high-level building services engineering education, training, research, and consultancy services in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta.


Program Structure

The program is offered in a mixed mode, with both full-time and part-time options available. The full-time program can be completed in 1 year, while the part-time program can be completed in 2.5 years. Students are required to attend classes in the daytime and evening if they choose the full-time mode of study.

Curriculum

The program requires students to complete 31 credits, which can be achieved through a combination of taught subjects and a dissertation. The program offers two options:


  • MSc with Dissertation: Students must complete 7 taught subjects, including 4 compulsory subjects and at least two other core subjects, plus a dissertation.
  • MSc without Dissertation: Students must complete 10 taught subjects, including 4 compulsory subjects and at least 3 other core subjects.

Recognition and Prospects

The program is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) as suitable further learning to meet the academic requirement for CEng registration. Graduates of the program can pursue careers in building services engineering, including design, consulting, contracting, building operation and maintenance, property development and management, and research.


Entrance Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must have:


  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours in building services engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering, or the equivalent
  • A professional qualification, such as full membership of the HKIE or the CIBSE, plus work experience in any branch of building services engineering
  • Evidence of an employer's support or sponsorship is advantageous, and relevant work experience in a building services engineering-related role is preferred.

Tuition Fee

The tuition fee for the program is HK$9,200 per credit for both local and non-local students.


Additional Information

The program has been selected by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for the Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies. Local students admitted to this program can apply for the scholarship. Entry scholarships are also available for eligible students.
