Program Overview
Engineering Doctorate
The Engineering Doctorate program is a collaborative effort between the Departments of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Computing, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The program is designed to be completed in either 3 years (full-time) or 5 years (part-time).
Program Objectives
The program aims to cultivate future industry leaders with innovative vision and advanced technology research experience in the fields of science, technology, and engineering. The program focuses on enhancing students' abilities in innovation and technology management, strengthening their professional knowledge and expertise in specific engineering fields, and fostering their research, innovation, and technology transfer capabilities from a practical perspective.
Program Characteristics
The program consists of 24 credits of coursework and a dissertation, as well as the completion of the "Academic Integrity and Ethics" (AIE) requirement (1 credit). The coursework includes 5 compulsory subjects and 3 elective subjects. All subjects are taught in English. Compulsory subjects are taught by PolyU professors, overseas professors, or a combination of both. Elective subjects can be chosen from guided learning subjects or overseas academic exchange subjects related to the dissertation.
Admission Requirements
To be eligible for the program, applicants must:
- Hold a master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
- Have substantial relevant work experience
- Demonstrate maturity, a positive attitude, and good English communication skills
- Meet the English language requirements (if the degree was awarded by a non-English speaking university):
- TOEFL internet-based test score of at least 80
- IELTS (Academic module) overall band score of at least 6.0
Program Structure
Students are required to complete 5 compulsory subjects, 3 elective subjects, and a dissertation, as well as the AIE requirement.

Each compulsory subject consists of 6-10 classes, scheduled intensively on Friday evenings and/or weekends at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus. Students are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation during the classes.
Elective Subjects
Students can choose from 3 elective subjects, including guided learning subjects or overseas academic exchange subjects related to the dissertation. Overseas academic exchange subjects aim to enhance and expand students' knowledge in innovation and advanced technology management.
Suggested Study Mode
The program offers two study modes: full-time and part-time.
Full-time
The full-time mode is designed to be completed in 3 years. Students are required to register for the dissertation in the first semester of the first year.
Part-time
The part-time mode is designed to be completed in 5 years. Students are recommended to register for the dissertation in the second semester of the second year, but the registration period is flexible, subject to the agreement of the supervisor.
Tuition Fees
The tuition fee for the full-time mode is HK$112,800 per semester, payable in 6 installments. The tuition fee for the part-time mode is calculated at HK$14,100 per credit, totaling 49 credits. The total program fee is HK$676,800, applicable to both full-time and part-time modes.
