Program Overview


Doctor of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Hotel and Tourism Management programme is designed for students pursuing applied research in their advanced education. Its objective is to provide a theoretical and research base that prepares graduates for research and education positions in hospitality and tourism.

Aims and Characteristics

Dual PhD Degree Programme with University of Surrey

The Dual PhD Degree programme with the University of Surrey only accepts applications for the September entry. Applicants need to choose either PolyU or the University of Surrey as their Home Institution. Applicants must fulfil the entrance requirements set by both PolyU and Surrey, no matter which university would be the Home Institution. Tuition fees will be paid to the Home Institution annually throughout the three years of study. Admitted applicants are required to spend no less than 18 consecutive months at each institution, with the first 18 consecutive months spent at the Home Institution.


Application Procedures for Dual PhD Degree Programme

  • Applications must be made to both PolyU and the University of Surrey.
    • For application to PolyU: After the submission of the online application, applicants should inform PolyU SHTM of the application number and the choice of Home Institution.
    • For application to the University of Surrey: Applicants should state clearly in the application form that they are applying for this Dual PhD Degree programme.

Admission Requirements and Application Documents

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management does not normally admit students for a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme. Entrance requirements and application procedures for the Dual PhD Degree programme are available upon request.
