Program Overview

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Engineering

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Engineering is a comprehensive programme that offers a strong integration of rehabilitation engineering and Prosthetics & Orthotics (P&O) elements. It is the first Biomedical Engineering programme in Hong Kong and is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Programme Overview

The programme provides students with a solid foundation in both health/medical sciences and engineering technologies. It covers crucial topics such as bioelectronics, biomechanics, and computer programming, and offers two specialized streams: Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Biomedical Engineering with Prosthetics and Orthotics (BME with P&O).

Junior Year

  • All admitted students will embark on a Common Year 1 curriculum within the Faculty of Engineering, which provides them with foundational knowledge of engineering technology.
  • Year 2 subjects further establish students fundamental knowledge in biomedical engineering.
  • The programme offers two specialized streams starting from Year 2:
    • Biomedical Engineering (BME)
    • Biomedical Engineering with Prosthetics and Orthotics (BME with P&O)

Senior Year

  • Year 3 subjects further strengthen students knowledge of biomedical engineering.
  • Students gain the opportunity to combine biomedical and engineering concepts, while also developing critical inquiry and thinking skills.
  • A unique feature of the programme is the two-semester "Biomedical Engineering Innovation for the Community" subject in Year 3.
  • Starting in Year 3, students can select elective subjects according to their chosen stream.
  • Year 4 subjects provide students with the opportunity to synthesize their learning, solve complex problems, and prepare for the next step whether that is launching their biomedical engineering careers or pursuing further education.
  • Biomedical engineering internships or clinical attachments are arranged during the summer semester to broaden students' real-world experience in the field.

Graduate Outcomes

Graduates will:

  • possess a solid foundation in both health/medical sciences and engineering technologies;
  • understand the health/medical issues that motivate the technologies and engineering solutions that they offer;
  • be able to develop and apply engineering technologies in areas such as clinical engineering, medical instrumentation and sensors, and prosthetics and orthotics;
  • become leaders in the biomedical engineering professionals who are self-motivated inquirers, critical thinkers, innovative problem solvers, effective communicators, team players, lifelong learners, and ethical practitioners;
  • be able to improve the community health status by health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and rehabilitation.

Unique Features

  • The programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
  • The P&O Stream of BSc (Hons) in BME is accredited by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics as Professional Prosthetist and Orthotist Training Programme.
  • The programme offers comprehensive P&O related education and training.
  • The programme equips students with a strong foundation of sports science knowledge in response to the rapidly expanding sports and health market.
